Zimmermann Ich wandte mich und sah an alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der sonne (And turning then, I saw the great injustice that is done under the heavens)
Beethoven Symphony No.9 Choral

Zimmermann's provocative ecclesiastical action with music is based on texts from the Old Testament and Dostoevsky's hugely influential The Grand Inquisitor from his The Brothers Karamazov. This parable of Biblical verse in oratorio form has been described as a deeply pessimistic artwork. Yet utter despair juxtaposed with Beethoven's setting of Schiller's Ode to Joy creates the perfect counterbalance. Liberty, equality and the ideals of the Enlightenment for a universal brotherhood of mankind triumph in Beethoven's Choral Symphony.
